From the Churchwardens

Kay and Nix are mulling the mullions

Mullions on the Church of the Good Shepherd, Shoreham Beach

Well, it’s been a very busy time for the churchwardens. Quite a lot of our time had been spent thinking about the mullion windows in the church’s extension which houses the side chapels and vestries.

When we had our last Quinquenial Inspection, reference was made for the need to replace these windows. As most of you will know the extension was built back in the 70s and has single-glazed windows. These have now degraded, letting in the cold and the damp in the winter as well as too much heat in the summer. The single glazed glass (of a type which is no longer available) is unsafe.

The replacement mullions will have double (or triple) glazing (something we should consider as an Eco church) and a wall at ground level to enable the addition of a damp course which would keep the church protected for the foreseeable future.

We have been obtaining quotes so that we can get an idea of how much this is going to cost and of course to present to the Diocese. One of the things with having anything done to the church is that we have to get a faculty (special permission) from the Diocese and they have been very helpful.

We’ve also been discussing with them the possibility of getting a grant but before we can even look at that we have to try and raise some of the money towards it ourselves.

We are putting our thinking caps on along with the fundraisers to find a way to do this so if you have any ideas, please do let us know…

Our next Quinquenial inspection will take place next year.
